"What a pretty car!" That's actually what my daughter said when she saw this one... and at first, I was like... Pretty? You don't refer to a classic Muscle Car as Pretty?? But the more I look at this car, the more I have to just let go of my Male Bravado and agree... It sure is Pretty!!
This one belongs to a fairly new acquaintance of mine from VA. We first met some years ago when he contacted me for some advice and guidance on the restoration of this newly acquired 67 SS. A car that spent all of its life in Texas and always within the same family, changing hands during the years and even raced for some time in the early part of its life! This new owner was able to acquire it with the odometer showing what appears to be approximately 69,000 miles and he hauled it back to VA where he has now become the 4th official owner. We spoke at length about the car, verified numbers and shared some stories and he purchased a Fact CD for some additional help as he was about to begin a full blown restoration. Except for an occasional email, I lost track of him and the status of his 67. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon... I sell a lot of Fact CD's and give out a lot of advice and never hear back from some people or see their completed cars. Well, more recently, I got the answers about this particular car when Daniel emailed me with some pictures of his now completed 67 SS! I was very pleased to see it and happy to hear that he accomplished what he set out to do. To my surprise, Daniel also indicated that he was looking to sell the car. Apparently, he is like so many in this hobby... Loves the Hunt, Loves the Research and the Loves the Build, but then it's on to something else, which is great for all you guys and gals out there looking to inherit a done car!
That's where I come in... putting another Good car into the hands of another Good person! So, let's find out what this car is and what it isn't!
This is a full Frame Off restored, Numbers Matching 67 Chevelle SS. Restored back to as close to factory original as the owner could do and wanted to do. It was not built with high point judging in mind, but instead as just a car that could be enjoyed and driven on those nice sunny days or taken to an occasional local car show for fun. Although that was the intent and it's been finished for almost a year, it has not really been driven any significant amount at all. Like many, the finished product turned out so well that it got trailered to a few car shows and has been garage kept and covered in between.
EXTERIOR:
Painted back to its rarely seen factory color of Capri Cream with a Black vinyl top (T2), this car is just stunning! Though it is really hard to capture the Capri Cream color in photos, as it does wash out easily, in person it's very soft and definitely not white or yellow. It has a brand new factory original black vinyl top as it should per the trim tag codes and rides on 14 inch Redline Bias-Ply tires, steel wheels and 67 dog dish hubcaps. All exterior chrome and moldings are new, the glass is a combination of new and original with the front windshield and vent glass being new and all other glass being original! Overall, I do have to admit, this is not a very Friendly Car... it's true... she could pass by you or be right next to you and not wave a bit! The sheet metal is straight! The gaps and lines are excellent! Yes, she's indeed Purdy!
INTERIOR:
The original Gold colored interior has been restored to factory condition... from headliner to carpets and everything in between. It's factory fresh and a beautiful contrast to the Capri Cream exterior! It has matching Gold standard style seatbelts and rubber floor mats, along with its original AM radio too. Everything works, from dome lights to dash lights to glove box light. She's Super clean and ready for a night on the town!
DRIVETRAIN:
Under the hood you will find the Original born with EDH coded 396/325hp engine. I have viewed the deck stamp and have no doubts about this being legitimate, as well as the rest of the tags and stamps one uses to verify a car. The engine was completely gone through, bored 40 over and has a very mild cam... it is fresh and runs strong! Although attention to originality/correctness were given, some things under the hood are not original such as the exhaust manifolds, distributor and carb... and I am sure a few other minor detail things. But the overall presentation is that of a factory original appearing engine bay... with the car still retaining its original Harrison Radiator and its factory original and cold blowing Air Conditioning too!
In 1967, options were plenty, even a 4 speed, which most seem to mistakenly think was standard in any Super Sport... but not so! This car is a prime example as shifting of the gears comes by way of this cars original column shifted Powerglide Transmission, which is also freshly rebuilt! No, not the typical Super Sport that most are used to seeing, I agree. This one has little added options... but then these cars were purchased by real people. Many times it was a compromise to satisfy that need for power but have something the family could afford and use as well, which may explain the optional Power Steering this car also has!
UNDERBELLY:
Starting with the frame, which was blasted clean and powdercoated, everything underneath was restored or replaced... Front to back, every nut and bolt was turned at some point. All new suspension, brakes, brake lines, fuel lines, wheel cylinders, Flowmaster duel exhaust, gas tank... you name it, it was done! This car is show ready on top and underneath! Original style factory tags, stickers and paint markings can be found throughout the undercarriage. Finally, out back you will find the original 12-bolt rear with original CX coded axle stamping showing it to be a 3.07:1 open rear differential.
There you have it... Another interesting well done 67 Chevelle Super Sport needing a new home. I've done my best to describe to you what it is and what it isn't, though I haven't mentioned the one thing many seem to want these days... Documentation. Sadly, there is none. However, the owner does know a fair amount about the car's history and past ownership, which most of us don't always have access to with the purchase of a muscle car... and while I too like to have the paper, it's not going to make this car anything more than what it is... PRETTY!
